When a job goes awry for the kurst-hunting duo Ajani and Zero, the two mercenaries fall on different paths through the harsh, monster-infested mountains of Xol. Zero, seeking the belonging and safety of one of the great Blood families, takes a job protecting Jastr Vaharas on a diplomatic mission - a job that leads him to a ruined city with dark implications for all. Meanwhile, Ajani walks the mountain roads alone in hopes of outrunning a haunted past. When he stops for supplies in a village mourning the death of a child, he leaves with more than he bargained for. As both delve deeper into the darkness shrouding Xol's past and present, they discover exactly what they’re prepared to sacrifice in order to protect the future.

Journey Across Xol

Haunted by monsters known as “kurst” and still recovering from the Aukvashi invasion that took place over a decade ago, Xol is called home by six great, Incolo Blood families. 

  • Ruled by the materialistic Erus Haem Corinth, Cor dealt with Aukvashi incursion through diplomacy rather than warfare. Now, Aukvashi and Incolo live side-by-side in this eclectic melting pot.

  • Ruled by Asha Vaharas, this once prosperous trade city prevented Aukvashi invaders from spreading deeper inland. Now, Vahar maintains an uneasy peace with the occupying forces of their sister city, Sahro.

  • Once the most prosperous port city in Xol, Sahro and its ruling Blood were decimated 10 years ago in a brutal surprise attack. Now, it is seat of Haamon Lahr, commander of the Aukvashi invaders.

  • Often called the city of nomads, Malkof is the gathering grounds for Xol’s largest herds of Felgrin and their faithful felguards. Ruled by the steadfast Erus Loran Malkofis, the city was one of the most powerful in all of Xol.

  • The Joarums are known for their whiskey, pride, and the brave skinners who transverse Xol via dog teams during Xol’s harsh winters to trade.

  • Isolated from the rest of Xol by steep mountain ranges, the Evontus are one of the few families who still dare to venture down into the Gathering Roads to mine precious minerals.

Meet the Cast

  • Aukvashi outcast, Kezi mercenary, glorified babysitter, and professional smart-ass. Annoyingly good with a bow.

  • Steadfast leader, Kezi mercenary, closeted ashblood, and casual sketch-artist. Will read minds without a warrant.

  • Loyal daughter and naive hero. May or may not have based her entire world view on the grumblings of her village elders.

  • Long-time mentor, coffee-reliant mercenary, and certified grump. Seriously considering retirement.

  • Untested warrior of Vaharas Blood. Will probably kill you with kindness before you can draw a weapon.

  • One of the last surviving Malkofis Blood members and a key witness to the fall of Malkof. Will stare at you while you sleep to make sure you’re still breathing.
